‘Price guide’ v valuation?

Price Guides

Several magazines and online resources offer price guides. So what is the difference between a free guide and a professional valuation of a vehicle?

A guide is just that. A guide. Most guides offer a range of figures for a range of conditions, for example: Condition 1: £10,000, Condition 2: £5,000, Condition 3: £2,000 etc.

What a guide doesn’t do is properly assess a vehicle in order that its condition can be accurately considered. Different guides use different condition grades; 1-5, 3-1, A-E etc and as condition is subjective, what do these grades actually mean? Structural integrity, restoration or originality and a myriad tiny details cannot be considered in a guide and important factors such as documentation and individual history are not accounted for.

Another thing to consider with a guide is its ‘sell-by date’. When was the information compiled and how up to date is it? Where has the information come from, has it come from a variety of respected sources and what were the qualifications of the people who compiled it? It could in fact be weeks, months or even years out of date.

Without specific application a guide is worthless and often little more than a list of figures.

Our valuations

We inspect, appraise and assess each vehicle in detail. We take into account exact condition, history, any restoration and modifications. A lifetime of involvement with some of the world’s finest cars and over 20 years professional experience is combined with extensive historic and current market information.

What about a ‘free’ valuation from an auction house or dealer? We are truly independent. Our business is valuation, not sales so we can offer ‘hands-off’ advice. We are not trying to undervalue in order to buy from you and we are not trying to overvalue to be given your vehicle to sell.

Whether we are appraising a barn-find BSA motorcycle or a multi-million pound Ferrari, honesty and integrity are our core values.
